All instruments in the Reason Electric Basses ReFill were recorded using multiple microphones and dedicated bass amp setups, giving you full control of your overall bass sound.
With a vast selection of instrument, mic and amplifier combinations to choose from, you can rest assured that the bass sound you are looking for can be found here.

After the last post about making music on the iPhone, I decided to to a search and I came across two nifty little iPhone Apps that actually let you make beats within the iPhone itself. The first is called mpc500 and looks amazing! (See image above on the left). It has 9 pads and I think you can even sequence with it. You can use all your own sounds and even load them in from iTunes. Sounds DOPE. The second one is called BeatPhone (which is on the right) and it looks pretty promising with much of the same features as the mpc500 except it even has a single octave keyboard controller built in. They both look like solid Apps (for what they are) and far easier to install than the manual concept I discussed earlier but it does require a slight hack to get it popping. Again, there’s now way I would use this to make something serious though I could probably get away with some D4L type joints — easy. This would definitely come in handy when you just need to lay down a quick idea on the spot. Surely it beats leaving wack beat box voice messages for yourself.

BeatPhone Example Video (Using the old interface)

I’m not exactly sure why anybody would actually want to do this with their phone but I guess its pretty cool to know that you COULD if you wanted to. For me it’s yet another incentive to go ahead and cop an iPhone. Read the instructions here. Essentially what Cesare Marilungo has done here is figured out a way to use the touch screen censors on the iPhone as midi controllers. From there you can set it up to trigger sounds on your Mac or PC. By no means is this easy to setup. Looks like you really gotta know what your doing to get it working.

I have to admit THOR has definitely been one of the toughest Reason racks to learn. I thought the Malstrom had a lot of knobs/buttons but Thor probably has twice as many. I’ve been rolling with the presets and them tweaking to get the sound that I want but I always wanted to know how to build sounds from scratch with this thing. Luckily Propellerhead has some really good tutorials on how to flip THOR without causing a headache. Peep the links below.

Also, I just realized that since this site has been up I have yet to post any sounds of my own for other Reason heads to mess around with. When I get a good amount of decent THOR patches made, I’ll be putting them up for free in the download section. I been slacking, I know.

Stumbled on a dope collection of nicely recorded drums. All of these drums are recorded on to a tape and then processed through all kinds of vintage synth machines to give them a really heavy sound. Listen to the sample and you can hear how warm and thick these sounds are. Way better than what you’ll find on your favorite D4L track.
Just listen to their write up:

Not another 808 sample! Well actually it isn’t… this is 407 samples taken from two 808′s recorded into an Ampex 351 1/2″ valve 2 track tape machine! That’s not all… We also put the 808′s through other vintage gear. Plus we recorded the 808′s naked into a Metric Halo ULN-2 firewire audio card. Then we chose the best samples.

All 24 bit, and all phat analog goodness!

If you can’t get a hold of a real 808 then this is as close as you can get in samples… Maybe even better than the having the real thing!

Download the 808 Cassette Tape drums and tons more here:
Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.
(The Free version of Cassette 808s is all the way at the bottom right, but the full version looks like its worth the $ too).

If I ever do an Algorythm Booty Bass Mix, I’m hitting these drums up HARD.
