All of these drums were created from drum sounds that were either recorded from breaks or ‘borrowed’ from random open drum sounds that you can pretty much find anywhere. I then opened them in Reason and applied a ton of EQ and compression FX to get them to sound how I needed them too. For a while I had been re-applying combinator FX for every Reason session. In other words; for every track, I was re-applying the same FX to each drum as Combinator patches and then re-tweaking them accordingly. Obviously this was KILLING my computer’s memory. Then I had the bright idea to record the drums out and re-load them in as pre-effected sounds — don’t know why I didn’t think of that in the first place. Anyways, this is how Drum Kit Part 1 came about.

If my memory serves me correctly I used one of these kicks on the first beat on F.I.R.S.T. I think I also hit this kit up on a couple of the instrumental tracks on Substantial’s Album. Some of the kicks were developed around one original kick and create a lot of depth if you use them together. I also ran a few of them through a couple of Cool Edit FX. As a disclaimer, these drums are probably NOT going to sound spectacular straight out of the box you will need to tweak them with EQ and levels to get them to knock in your own mix (just like any other sound). I also have some Snares, and a set of miscellaneous sounds that I will be sharing real soon.

Here’s a couple of Reason Combinator skins available for free download. I don’t really know why anybody other than myself would want to use these but, what the hell. Didn’t really come up with a concept for the design. I just wanted it to look like one of those old, grimy, used keyboards from the 60s and 70s. P.S. Don’t worry I will be sharing some actual Reason Combinator patches real soon.
