Apple Profile: Erykah Badu

Apple builds with Erykah on her new creative process that includes Garage Band, a MacBook and her Home studio.

“Making this album at home felt good,” Badu says. “I felt relaxed. I didn’t feel any pressure at all. I took my time. And in taking my time, things happened so quickly. I know that’s strange, but that’s how it happened. I didn’t have to go through the hustle and bustle and fuss of finding another engineer. I have a home studio, but I didn’t use it that much, because I was able to maneuver things by myself on the Mac. In four months, I had three albums—seventy-something songs and 20 to 50 more ideas.”

For New Amerykah, Badu laid freestyle vocals over tracks from producer 9th Wonder, who collaborated with producer James Poyser. “9th Wonder would send me a track and I would put some vocals on it, put a tambourine on it or something. Then 9th Wonder would IM it to James Poyser, who would put some keys on it. Poyser would IM it back to me, and I’d write a hook. I’d send it all to Mike Chavarria, and he would dump everything to two-inch tape to get a nice warm analog sound.”

The Record Industry Keeps Getting Stupider.

The Record Industry Keeps Getting Stupider.

So apparently, if your longing for mindless advertisements just isn’t fulfilled through TV Commercials, Billboards and Myspace ads, don’t worry. Now Sony BMG and the Geniuses at We7 will be putting 10 sec of ads before all of Sony’s digital catalog — For FREE. Sorry for theh sarcasm but its true. Sony is opening up their whole catalog to the public for free as long as you’re willing to put up with about 10sec of pre-appended ad space. Read more about this completey STUPID idea over at Big Arena Records. This really pisses me off. They really couldn’t care less about the art form.

Muxtape

I’m not sure how long this has been around but I think it’s a pretty dope idea. It’s basically a way to create your own mixtape and share it with ANYBODY. No ads. No crapily written bios. No lame photo galleries. JUST MUSIC. It even works on the iPhone! I’ve got my page set up at algorythm.muxtape.com. Right now it has a few beats that you’ve probably already heard here, but when the second instrumental project is done, I will be putting up there so you can stream the tracks individually.

WTF! Dilla’s Manager: “STOP POCKETING MONEY IN HIS NAME…

Written by . Filed under Blog. Tagged , , , , , , . 2 Comments.

I try to stay away from jacking content from other sites but I think this one deserves to break that rule. It sounds like a ton of these Dilla Tribute functions aren’t always legit and some of the promoters are pocketing the $. Makes me sick to my stomach but luckily one of Dilla’s former managers, Jonathan Dworkin is taking a stand using ad space. Peep the complete post and a write up of the ad over at Nodfactor.com.

To this day, I still feel like its backwards how so many people love Dilla’s music with out Dilla becoming a household name like Dre, Timbo, Primo, etc. My feeling is that it sadly yet simply comes down to numbers and sheer sales. Most of Dilla’s fame has come from people who have heard his music LOVED it but never made it to the store to actually pick it up — which SUCKS. After hearing Fantastic Vol. 2 there was no way I wasn’t owning every piece of work he was associated with. Maybe it’s just timing; his music really started to pop off around the early Napster days back when Like Water For Chocolate and Amplified we’re dropping. So maybe the internet is to blame? I don’t know…Anyways, peep what Dilla’s manager has to say about it…I agree with home completely.

Dilla, Tribe, & The Love Movement

Love Sex Zodiac

I catch a lot of slack for this but “The Love Movement” has always been my favorite Tribe album. Don’t get me wrong, “People’s Instinctive Travels…” and “Beats Rhymes and Life” are VERY close behind. Love Movement just has this smooth, consistent style about it that sets it two or three notches above their other projects in my mind. For me, the sound of the short-lived production team “The Ummah” IS this album which is why this is such a staple Tribe album.

On a seemingly unrelated note, the other day I stumbled on to this joint called: Love, Sex, and The Zodiac by Cannonball Adderley. Read More »

(I know I’m late.)

Never knew this dude was using Reason nor did I know he was this crazy with it. Now I’m even more amazed by DJ Khalil’s music.
It’s good to hear Nas on top of a beat that fits his tone and cadence.

Here’s a snippet of the Nas joint. Read More »
