“Put it in the 16 Levels!”
Found this the other day on Kev’s blog. Its been out for a minute but i’m just now putting an ear on it. I’ve loved Kev’s work since I first heard that Jazzy Jeff / BBE joint and from a producer’s stand point, this is a damn genius idea. He basically goes through and dissects various songs that he’s produced over the last few years. Sometimes he’s talking about where an idea came from, or how he recorded it, or even how he programs his bass lines(see title). He plays all the beats straight from the MPC so he gets really in depth with it. You can hear where he chops and sometimes he even solos the separate tracks. It’s all one-take / non edited and you can see how low budget this dude really is but regardless the music comes out great. Not to mention that dude is hilarious! I don’t know anybody else doing this right now. Any producer or beat fanatic needs to give this a listen. Download the full project here.
There’s also a “Commentary Vol.1” that I’m trying to get my hands on now. Anybody with that link, hit me with it ASAP. EDIT: Found it!
Here’s a Video of Kev chopping as well.
Shouts to Kev for repping MD HARD.
(LOL@ the He-Man poster in the back of the pic…HAHA)
